If teaching was merely a technical enterprise, then good teachers would rarely make mistakes, since teaching (like plumbing) would consist of applying technical knowledge and skills upon which an expert could be relied. What good is a plumber who keeps making mistakes, misconnecting pipes and causing leaks and floods? But the essence of an educator does not lie in technical expertise but in a complex of pedagogical qualities.
