GROUP INSURANCE

The University provides group insurance coverage to all full time faculty and librarians. The insurance benefits are effective with your date of employment.

Continued Absence due to Illness, Injury or Disability (formerly called Short Term Disability) coverage provides 105 days of fully-paid leave and is employer insured. For any absence in excess of 10 consecutive days a member, when requested, shall provide a note from a licensed physician, dentist, etc. which certifies that the member cannot attend to normal duties. The information will be restricted to: A description of the impact of the illness or injury on the member's ability to perform duties; relevant restrictions in the type of duties that may be performed, the prognosis with respect to the member's ability to return to work, and a statement that the health care provider's conclusion is based on a recent examination. See Article E in the Collective Agreement for further details.

Long Term Disability coverage comes into play on the 106th day of absence and is insured by Great West Life. This coverage provides a pro-rated benefit to a maximum of $10,000 monthly, indexed to the person's salary. On your paycheque you will notice that you pay the LTD premium. This is done because if there is ever a need for LTD coverage, the payments will be non-taxable. As of June 2007 the rates paid per plan member are .64 cents per $100 earned (down from .97 cents per $100 in 2005/06 and .83 cents per $100 earned in 2006/07). See Article E in the Collective Agreement for further details.

Basic Life Insurance and Accidental Death or Dismemberment (A.D.& D.)
Basic Life Insurance premiums are employer paid and provided by Sun Life Insurance. A.D.& D. coverage is provided by Chubb Insurance and is also employer-paid. The insurance benefit provides three (3) times annual salary, rounded to the next highest $1,000, to a maximum of $400,000. Insurance coverage remains the same for those who are continuing employment past age 65 years.

Optional Life, Dependent Life and A.D.& D. - Employees can opt to choose additional life insurance, dependent life and A.D. & D. coverage at their own expense. WUFA STRONGLY ENCOURAGES MEMBERS TO TAKE THIS ADDITIONAL INSURANCE FOR THEIR PARTNER OR DEPENDENTS which is a minimal payment off each pay cheque.
