Canadian Social Forum to take place in Windsor, June 18-21

QuickImage Category Social Forum
The first World Social Forum was held in Brazil as a diverse,  non-capitalist, open-space alternative  to the World Economic Forum held yearly in Davos, Switzerland.

The WSF has prompted the creation of numerous regional social forums, including the upcoming Canadian Social Forum taking place in Windsor from June 18 to 21. This is followed shortly after by the US Social Forum which is taking place in Detroit from June 22 to 26.

The mission of the Canadian Social Forum is to pull together progressive groups and individuals locally and from across Canada who are concerned about meeting human needs over the desires of capital and business. The goal of the gathering is to provide the opportunity for debate, discussion and mutual education through panel discussions, presentations, cultural events and workshops. Topics to be discussed include: food, workplace safety, poverty, housing, free trade, HIV/AIDs, racism, violence against women, unionization, climate change, great lakes pollution, air quality, migrant workers and more.

This event is sponsored by a number of organizations including the Centre for Studies in Social Justice, Labour Studies, and the Windsor University Faculty Association. Tickets for this event are available at Ten Thousand Villages Windsor, 624 Chilver Road Unit 102. They cost $15 each.  Free admittance is available to anyone facing financial barriers. Please contact CHANGE@socialforum.ca for more information.
