Studies of van der Waals Complexes
Cd-, Zn-, and Mg-noble gas van der Waals molecules are formed in a supersonic expansion beam and their spectra are studied using pump and probe methods of laser spectroscopy. Spectroscopic constants and dissociation energies are obtained from excitation spectra and, because of the supersonic-jet cooling, it is possible to identify and study even complex molecular ions and clusters. This facility is also being used to study collisional excitation transfer, quenching, and lifetimes of excited atomic and molecular states.
