Safety and Security

Emergency Telephones
- emergency telephones are installed on campus to provide immediate access to Campus Community Police
- EMERGENCY TELEPHONES ARE YELLOW AND ARE MOUNTED ON A POLE WITH A BLUE LIGHT ON TOP
- emergency procedures are written on the box
- also located outside the front doors of each residence building
Fire Evacuation Procedures
On Discovering Fire: sound the alarm
On Hearing the Alarm: evacuate the building
- each occupant shall be aware of the evacuation procedure
- students must act in an orderly and disciplined manner at all times
- building must be completely evacuated
- elevator is NOT to be used during evacuation
- all room doors must be closed and locked
- close the window and turn off lights, computers etc. before leaving the room, if time permits
- all residents will make their way in an orderly manner to the closest exit or stairwell and proceed to the outside area as quickly as possible. Do not wait for your fire monitor. Move away from the building. DO NOT block entrances.
- all recreational type rooms must be evacuated
- the Resident Assistant or fire monitor(s) on each floor will make a final check of all resident rooms by knocking on the door
- if a particular evacuation exit is blocked, be aware of an alternate exit
- at all times walk quickly — do not run
- familiarize yourself with the location of all fire alarms, exits and procedures
- remain outside the building until the Fire Department, Campus Community Police or Residence Staff indicate that you can return
Failure to leave the building is a serious infraction and will be treated as such. Students failing to evacuate a building during an alarm will be fined $125 for each occurance. It is the duty of each resident to respond to an unsafe situation and report it.
THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES ARE APPLICABLE TO CLARK RESIDENTS ONLY:
Upon hearing the Evacuation Alarm the (Apartment Representative) will:
- go through the apartment, knock on room doors and advise persons to evacuate
- ensure the apartment is vacant by way of the front door and inform the Unit Representative that the apartment has been vacated
- ensure that no one re-enters the apartment until advised to do so
Upon hearing the Evacuation Alarm the Unit Representative will:
- wait outside their unit to hear from all of the Apartment Representatives from that unit
- advise the Residence Life Coordinator and Resident Assistant as to the status of the apartments in their unit
First Aid Kit
- located in every building at the front desk
- kits contain gauze, bandages, antiseptics, thermometer.
- injury or illness requiring more extensive attention should be referred to Student Health Services or a hospital.
Medical Emergency
- in the event of an EMERGENCY dial 911 from a campus phone to be connected to Campus Community Police. By dialing 9-911 from a campus phone or 911 from a cellular phone you will be connected to Windsor's 911 Response Center
- then contact a Resident Assistant in person or the on-duty Resident Assistant between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm by calling the pager
- all Resident Assistants and Residence Life Coordinators are qualified in First Aid, CPR and trained in emergency response.
Residence Security
- residence students must share responsibility for their personal safety and security
- please follow the suggestions noted below to protect yourself, your belongings and fellow residents
- keep room / unit door locked at all times, use deadbolt lock if supplied
- do not lend keys / swipe cards or leave them where they may be taken
- if keys are lost, report the loss immediately to a residence staff person
- if swipe card is lost, report to the UWin card office immediately (CAW Centre, lower level)
- do not leave valuables in a visible location
- label all personal belongings
- do not open doors, or sign people into the residence buildings that are not personally known to you
- report any suspicious person or behaviour to a Resident Assistant or Campus Community Police immediately. Lock your door and phone for assistance.
- do not carry large amounts of cash or share P.I.N. numbers
- do not prop any doors open.
- walk with a friend at night and use well travelled and well lit roads
- please remember that smoking and open flames (i.e. candles, incense etc.) are not permitted in residence
- buy a high quality bicycle lock
- do not leave messages saying no one is at home
- secure windows if living on the first floor
- report all damaged locks, lights and other safety hazards immediately
- secure laptops to desks by using a lock. (If anchor bolt is attached to desk.)
Tornado Procedures
In the event of a severe weather warning (tornado) Residence Services staff will inform the residents of each floor and instruct them of safety procedures.
- stay away from all windows, doors and outside walls
- be sure to protect your head, in particular
- for maximum safety, go down to the basement or failing that, seek shelter under a stairwell, sturdy table or in a closet
- try to reach the center of the building or the side away from the storm
- remain inside until the warning has passed
Utilities Failure
- in the event of a utilities failure, contact your Resident Assistant or the Resident Assistant on duty
- describe the situation and location
- students who are responsible for a power failure due to violation of residence regulations will be financially responsible for the cost of resetting the system
- DO NOT CALL 911.
NOTE: The University shall not be liable for compensation if any of the following occur: strikes, fires, explosion, water, Acts of God, civil disorder or disturbance, vandalism, riot, sabotage, or for any cause beyond the control of the University.
